I’ve moved!

5 Dec

The boyfriend has invited me to move in with him. Well, not really. Actually we’re only talking ftp-hosting so far. Bottom line: From now on, my blog can be found at this address: http://copenhagenish.me/

The reason for the move is a bit more freedom. Even so, I still really like WordPress’ service – especially for the community, which I will miss. I will make sure to still check in and see what all the wonderful WordPress bloggers are up to :)

I wish I needed glasses

1 Dec

Here I am, trying to look like something out of How to Kill a Mockingbird.

…Which I really don’t, but fortunately the boyfriend does. Since he recently broke his old ones, I had the opportunity to pester him with suggestions for designer glasses. In the end he bought this lovely pair, which I am sporting on the pic, from Oliver Peoples.

Oliver Peoples make beautiful frames with references to the 1950s. These specific specs are from the Gregory Peck collection.

By the way: You can get them in sunglasses as well, if you happen to suffer from perfect eyesight.

Shirt is from the absolutely wonderful Danish brand Stella Nova, which I will definitely dedicate a blog post to in a near future.

Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch

Here's Gregory Peck portraying Atticus Finch in the 1962 production of How to Kill a Mockingbird.

The tortoise shell version.

The wish(ful) list

29 Nov

Christmas is coming up, and so everyone is making wish lists. This is the impossible version. Taking into consideration that my family does NOT have a big tradition for presents, it’s somewhat unlikely that it would be given to me for Christmas.

I’m perfectly fine with that: I love Christmas, but I dislike it when presents become something that people feel entitled to, and when families go bankrupt because they need to live up to absurdly high expectations.

However, all of these considerations will not stop me from doing a bit of wishful thinking. The way I figure it, wishful thinking is good for the soul :)

The list

1. A down jacket.

I’ve actually tried on a few of the jackets I’ve mentioned earlier. The one that combines warmth with style is the Canada Goose Womens Kensington Parka.

2. Shoulder bag

There are several I love, but right now I’ve fallen for Yvonne Koné’s designs, which are both raw and feminine. Just about any bag from her would do, especially a hobo.

3. Wedge ankle boots

These from Alaïa are so pretty it nearly hurts.

4. Chunky leather pumps

Absolutely lovely, and quite easy to keep the balance in. These from Carven are perfect, but you can get a perfectly passable (and considerably less pricey) version from Top Shop.

5. Karmameju Calm Balm

Here’s a gift I might just end up buying for myself. I’m a big fan of Karmameju – in fact, I have some of their lush furniture. They also make yoga mats, bathrobes, and a lovely spa series. All of their designs focus on well-being and have a wonderfully zen feeling to them.

6. Redken Color Rough Paste 12

Really, it’s just a wax. But it does something every other wax I’ve used never did: It works – without making my hair look greasy.

7. Leggings

The good thing about leggings (as opposed to skinny jeans) is that you can actually remain just as comfortable as if you were wearing a pair of sweat pants. They look great with a big sweater, and if you get the woolen or leather ones that are in fashion this season, your legs will stay warm even through the coldest of winter days. These ones from Surface to Air are just perfect.

8. T-shirts

They’re the foundation of my wardrobe. Sometimes I hide them away under a big, fat sweater. Sometimes they peak out under a cardigan. Sometimes I just wear them with a pair of jeans. But not just any tee will do: T-shirts need to flatter and hug your body at the right places. With enough persistance, they can sometimes be found at H&M (but just as often they can’t). Playing it safe would be American Vintage, like this one.

9. A big fat woolen cardigan…

Is a must to get through Danish winter. I tend to move into one in December, and not come out again until March. This one, from Ilaria Nistri, is the absolute luxury version.

10. A sexy sweater

A contradiction in terms? Not necessarily. This beautiful sweater from Danish brand Designer’s Remix is slightly transparant. You could wear it over a sexy chemise – or just a tee, depending on your mood.

11. Leather Bracelet

Okay, okay. I was only going to do ten. But I just had to add this: An edgy, yet feminine little leather bracelet from Loopie Love. It’s even affordable. It’s the kind of thing you might get from your boyfriend for Christmas – nudge, nudge.

Two Danes

26 Nov

I especially like the lovely knits from Two Danes, but everything in their collection would fit nicely into my wardrobe.

Two Danes is a small company that designs basic wear for your wardrobe. They use wonderful materials, like Merino wool, but still produce affordable items. So far, their things are only available in Denmark, but hopefully someone will pick them up soon, so that everyone will have access to their great designs.

Go Native American

25 Nov

Aboriginal fashion

Copenhagen seems to be going native. One example of this are these wonderful mukluks from Canadian Manitobah, which seem to grace the feet of many a fashion conscious woman this winter.

The company is run by native Americans, and the designs are inspired by traditional aboriginal footwear, but combined with modern-day technology that will keep your feet warm and comfortable all through winter.

Pendleton (traditionally know for their wollen plaids) are giving it more of a Navajo twist. I love their Native American patterns on bags, jackets, and even dinner plates.

I’ve always wondered why it is that modern architecture is so much about glass and steel. When you look at the people between the buildings, they seem to long for a different age – when houses were built of wood, and people were swathed in furs and wool. Maybe this particular fashion is a symptom of us longing for simpler times – of living in harmony with nature.

Anyway.

Twiggy style

'The banana'.

Today the boyfriend and I have been taking pictures for a new header for this blog. It feels a bit strange plastering my own face all over these pages, but I think it’s a good way of making things a bit more personal. So, hopefully no-one will find it too self-indulgent.

Anyway, I was playing around with a concept for the header, and then thought of my old Margit Brandt dress. It’s one part space cadet, one part Twiggy, which inspired me to do a 60s makeup.

Note the ‘banana’: The black line in the crease of my eyelid. It’s all the rage this season. However, I’ve only ever seen it used on the runway and in fashion magazines. I thought it would be difficult to do, but it was really quite easy. I used my black eyeliner pencil  from MAC Cosmetics (my favourite brand). The rest of my makeup is pretty much MAC too, except the eye shade, which is a pearly white metallic from Jane Iredale. I’ve used a white eyeliner inside the eye, to get that doe-eyed Twiggy-look.

Oh, one more thing: About the dill – it’s a painting that I did on my wall. Just thought it might look nice in the background, and it gives a bit of consistency.

Doing my space cadet thing.

I love the quilted collar.

Gearing up for winter

19 Nov
IFur hat

I wish I were a cat

Whilst hunting for an affordable winter coat, I accidentally tripped over this wonderful fur hat from Swedish company, House of Saki, and knew I had to have it. I have always had a thing for fur hats. Not just because I live in a country with very cold winters, but also because fur is just plain stylish.
